Portuguese Police Intercept Narco-Submarine with 1.7 Tonnes of Cocaine in Atlantic Waters

In a major win against drug trafficking, Portuguese authorities have seized a semi-submersible vessel carrying more than 1.7 tonnes of cocaine in the Atlantic Ocean. The operation took place off Portugal’s southwestern coast, highlighting ongoing efforts to disrupt illegal drug routes from South America to Europe.

The vessel, often called a “narco-sub,” was spotted and stopped during a routine maritime patrol on November 4, 2025. Officials from Portugal’s Judicial Police (PJ) worked with international partners to board the craft, which was traveling low in the water to avoid detection. Inside, they found 1,700 kilograms of high-purity cocaine hidden in secret compartments.

Four Venezuelan nationals, believed to be the crew, were arrested without resistance. They face charges of drug trafficking and illegal immigration. The submarine, about 20 meters long and built for stealth, was designed to carry large loads under the sea surface, making it hard for radar to pick up.

This bust is part of a larger crackdown on narco-subs, which have become a key tool for cartels moving drugs across oceans. Experts say the street value of the seized cocaine could top 100 million euros, enough to supply illegal markets in several European countries. No injuries were reported, and the drugs were taken to a secure facility for further testing.

Portuguese officials praised the teamwork that led to the interception, noting it prevents tons of harmful substances from reaching communities. Investigations continue to trace the submarine’s origin and any links to larger networks. This event underscores the growing use of advanced vessels in global drug trade, pushing law enforcement to adapt with better technology and cooperation.
