Charli XCX Embraces Debate Over Her “Divisive” Glastonbury Performance

Charli XCX has responded to the mixed reactions to her Glastonbury set, admitting she enjoys the “discourse” surrounding her bold artistic choices.

The 32-year-old pop star faced criticism after her performance—aired on BBC One and BBC iPlayer—with some viewers accusing her of relying too heavily on backing tracks and auto-tune. Social media erupted with comments labeling her show “boring” and questioning her authenticity as a live performer.

Unfazed, Charli defended her avant-garde approach, stating that her art is meant to challenge norms.

“Really enjoying these boomer-vibe comments on my Glastonbury performance. It’s super fascinating,” she wrote. “The idea that using auto-tune makes you a fraud or not having a live band means you’re not a ‘real artist’ is the most boring take ever. Yawn—sorry, just fell asleep xx.”

She doubled down on her stance, adding, “The best art is divisive and confrontational. It sparks conversation and evolves into something culturally meaningful, rather than being safe, easily digestible, and forgettable.”

Despite the backlash, Charli stands by her Glastonbury show, which heavily featured tracks from her latest album, brat, reinforcing her reputation as a pop provocateur unafraid to push boundaries.
